Homecoming in Ypsilanti had parking lots filled with green-clad Eagle fans eager to celebrate a victory. Hopes have grown in these parts with a shocking win over Arizona State just two weeks earlier. Couple that with a team that has seen more recent post season action, the expectation to win more frequently is soaring.
A sun splashed day in Ypsi provided a beautiful setting for gameday. Fans gathered for the Eagle Walk outside the main entrance while cheering along with the band’s playing of the fight song and snapping pictures with Swoop the Eagle.
Massachusetts came in hoping to spoil EMU’s momentum and at first, it looked like they might succeed. The Minutemen jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead that had Eagle fans scratching their heads. However, Eastern found their rhythm in the second half with two Austin Smith touchdown tosses and an improved defensive effort that secured a 20-13 triumph.
The Eagle team gathered with the band and fans afterward to sing the fight song. The happy homecoming crowd spilled back into parking lots to continue the celebration. The hope is that Eastern continues to gather more big wins like these and build a winning tradition that makes Rynearson Stadium a place to be on Saturdays.
