Finding Yager Stadium turned out to be a strange trek though woods and farmland (see post on Yager Stadium), but it ended in a pleasing result. The first quarter saw Kent State take control with a 14-3 lead under gray skies. The second quarter saw the skies open releasing cold rain on the Redhawk fans that came to watch their team.
As the rain drained into the gutters, fans drained out of the stands. It’s a shame because the game turned out to be a classic. Many found shelter underneath the stands and huddled around two televisions broadcasting the game. By halftime, many had given up and found the exits. At the fourth quarter, the rain began to settle down and fans shifted to find better seats. They witnessed the Redhawks come back with a blocked punt for a touchdown and an interception in the end zone that kept Kent State from taking the lead. Final: 27-21. After the game, the team celebrated with the band on the field singing the fight song and raising their helmets in victory. Fans greeted the Redhawks as they left the field and headed into the locker room. These devoted fans found this result to be worth the soaked clothes.
