The Spartans sauntered into Camp Randall Stadium handling a pretty fancy resume holding opponents to 40 yards on the ground and being the leading rush defense in the nation. Unfortunately for Michigan State, the interview process, conducted by Heisman candidate Ron Dayne, did not go very well. Dayne collected 51 yards on his first touchdown run four plays into the game and finished the day with 214 putting him 483 yards from the all time rushing record. Up to this point, the most Michigan State had allowed an entire team was 108 yards.
On the other side of the ball, it became clear that the cold temperatures in the air were not only a result of Mother Nature, but also the frigidity of Michigan State’s offense. Their super stars burned out while Wisconsin’s shined. Of course, the Badger defense contributed, as well led by Jamar Fletcher in the secondary. The 40-10 final wouldn’t have been predicted even by the most loyal of Badger fans.
Michigan State fans traveled in droves to Madison to witness their team take a turn for the worse. For them, the weather grew more grim and arctic. I imagine that the chilliest of the partisans from Michigan was the green body painted fan with the white “S” on his chest. This fellow travels around a lot and displays his loyalty by acquiring all sorts of heckles not to mention a probable case of hypothermia. For Wisconsin, the domination of the Spartans has developed dreams of warmer climates out west where the roses grow.
