Heading into this season, New Mexico finds itself not to be favored in any game on their schedule. That includes the home opener against Montana State, an FCS team that is predicted to win by double digits. But, the Lobos have hired a program defibrillator by the name of Bronco Mendenhall. While wins are not expected to accumulate in great numbers this season, hope is surging in the Land of Enchantment.
On a scorching August afternoon, Lobo fans shuffled into University Stadium. Many Bobcat supporters made the pilgrimage from Bozeman to see their FCS powerhouse open the season on the road. Many seemed confident that their team would cover the spread, but it was New Mexico that jumped out to a double digit lead early in the 2nd quarter with a 17-0 advantage.
Led by quarterback Devon Dampier, the Lobos looked sharp in the season opener. Montana State allowed scoop and scores that set them back. But, down 31-14 at the onset of the 4th, the Bobcats put together 3 touchdown drives of 80+ yards to recapture the lead with ten seconds left leaving Lobo fans dejected once again.
Chants crying for basketball season began to ring from the stands. But, New Mexico far exceeded expectations on this day, which should have hope surging. The crowd was boisterous and invested. The band, Lobo Louie, and the spirit squad had University Stadium energized. It should not be surprising if the Lobos pull an upset or two this season.
