CEFCU Stadium is home to San José State football. Originally known as Spartan Stadium, CEFCU opened in 1933, but has undergone significant renovations. While the capacity dropped as a result of the facelift, the fan and athlete experience has increased. CEFCU Stadium offers an intriguing blend of classic collegiate and distinctively modern.
The integrity of the facility has been maintained, but the entire sideline opposite the press box showcases an athletic complex that features club seating along the second level. While it houses locker rooms, meeting rooms, and much more for Spartan athletic programs, it also provides fans with creative seating options featuring fantastic vantage points. At ground level in front of the complex, a variety of umbrella covered tables and chairs span the sidelines for additional viewing.
Gamedays in San José are highlighted by the SJSU Spartan Marching Band and outstanding cheer teams that infuse energy throughout CEFCU Stadium. Colorfully decorating the day with dance and sound, these staples of college football are as impactful as anywhere in the nation. While not known as a football powerhouse, San José State has a deep history dating back to the early 1800s. Such a long span of existence collects a loyal fan base that loves their Spartans.
Like many universities in their early years, San José State experienced periods of mascot identity shifts. After identifying as the Daniels, the Teachers, the Pedagogues, the Normals, and the Normalities, they eventually settled on Spartans in 1922. Today, Sammy the Spartan represents SJSU. He is the wide-grinned spirit force on the sidelines that infuses pride in the Santa Clara Valley. His playful presence at sporting events is a highly anticipated component of gameday.
Pride pours from all corners at San José State and a football Saturday displays it resolutely. Just outside the stadium rests the gigantic Sparta statue that greets visitors with an image of tenacity and a victorious spirit. It’s plaque proclaims that power and strength of Sparta and its Spartan inhabitants. All of these qualities fill the fan base and shine as vividly as the blue and gold that paint gameday in San José.
