Game #368: Jacksonville State @ Georgia Southern

Two tough losses in California disrupted the onset of Georgia Southern’s 2025 campaign. However, the Eagles hosted Game 3 at Paulson Stadium welcoming the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in Statesboro. The 0-2 start did not diminish the energy around town as fans geared up in their blue and white for game day. The traditional yellow-school-bus drop off ignited the Eagle Walk, and football season was officially underway.

The fifth largest crowd in Paulson Stadium history gathered to watch the first home game on the schedule. Before toe met leather, a tearful tribute took place to honor the memory of Georgia Southern’s beloved bald eagle mascot, Freedom, who passed away recently. Outside the stadium, fans admired the new bronze statue of Freedom that had just been unveiled the night before. Freedom served as a symbol of pride for this fan base as he traditionally soared over the stands of Paulson Stadium prior to kickoff. In the years ahead, there will be a successor, but Freedom’s legacy will always fill Statesboro’s skies.

Proud hearts that celebrated Freedom soon grew fluttery as the game proved to be quite competitive. Led by quarterback JC French, the Eagles kept the offensive pressure on. With just under 7 minutes left and the game tied at 34, Georgia Southern capped off a drive that gave them a touchdown lead, and they never looked back. Credit the fans that packed the place. The hysteria that pulsated through the crowd never faded. From vitality to victory, this stadium showcase why it is branded as the “Power of Paulson.”
