UNLV – ALLEGIANT STADIUM

Allegiant Stadium

The pageantry of college football is amplified in flashy Las Vegas, and UNLV has embraced the city as an extension of its identity. Attending a game at Allegiant Stadium may not provide a traditional campus gameday atmosphere, but it delivers every hallmark of the sport infused with unmistakable Vegas flair. From 1971 through 2019, the Rebels played at Sam Boyd Stadium, located on the far eastern edge of the city and well removed from campus. Attendance fluctuated, and the aging venue eventually became obsolete. The most practical and lucrative solution was moving into the newly built Allegiant Stadium, just two miles west of the Las Vegas Strip. Since opening there in 2020, UNLV has embraced its new home and brought the spectacle of college football indoors.

The pomp and tradition of gameday come alive through sequined spirit squads and a show-stopping marching band. Known as the “Star of Nevada,” the band performs during pregame festivities both outside the stadium for tailgaters and on the field before kickoff. Music is central to the Las Vegas experience, and the band delivers a commanding soundtrack to the day’s festivities. As the opening notes of “Win With the Rebels” puncture the atmosphere, anticipation swells. The Star of Nevada Marching Band sets the tone for a dazzling gameday experience.

Embracing the style and symbolism of Las Vegas is what makes UNLV football unique. Icons of the city are woven throughout the program, from the famous diamond-shaped “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign appearing on logos and football equipment to the distinctive eight-pointed star that crowns the landmark. The Star of Nevada Marching Band even includes the Rat Pack classic “Luck Be a Lady” in its gameday repertoire. References to gambling appear throughout the stadium experience, from in-game entertainment to advertising. Drawing upon decades of iconic imagery and tradition, UNLV seamlessly incorporates the spirit of Las Vegas into its football culture.

UNLV adopted the Rebels nickname in 1957. In true rivalry fashion, the name emerged as an act of “rebellion” against the state’s more established institution, the University of Nevada, Reno. The “Hey Reb!” mascot debuted in the 1980s and, although intended to portray a frontiersman, still carried associations with the Confederacy. Following years of student protests, the university retired imagery connected to that era. While UNLV no longer has an official mascot, it has retained the Rebels nickname as a symbol of the independent, spirited, and maverick nature of its fans and the Las Vegas community.

In the end, UNLV football stands apart by blending the traditions of college football with the energy and identity of Las Vegas. From its move to Allegiant Stadium and the performances of the Star of Nevada Marching Band to its embrace of the city’s iconic imagery and evolving history, the Rebels have created a gameday experience that is both uniquely Vegas and unmistakably UNLV.
