North Dakota State has long been a threat to FBS teams. With 18 national championships spanning the old College Division, Division II and FCS, few major college football programs expressed much interest in scheduling the Bison. As an FCS school, North Dakota State defeated Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State and Minnesota, just to name a few. So when the Bison moved up to the FBS in 2026, the transition felt natural.
Their inaugural game as a member of the highest level would provide the first opportunity to prove they belonged. Many figured incoming opponent Jacksonville State could pose a serious threat to spoil North Dakota State’s FBS debut. After all, Jax State had made significant strides as a young FBS program, reaching the Conference USA championship game in 2025 before falling just short of winning the league.
Inside the Fargodome, though, the energy told a different story. From the opening notes of “Thunderstruck,” it felt like North Dakota State’s game. It took just five minutes for the Bison to score. Nathan Hayes found Reis Kessel for the program’s first FBS touchdown, sending the Fargodome into a frenzy. Jacksonville State responded with a score late in the first quarter, but that would be all the Gamecocks could muster. North Dakota State took away Jacksonville State’s biggest threats and cruised to a 33-7 victory.
Being in Fargo on a game day, it was somewhat surprising that North Dakota State had not made the move to the highest level sooner. From the tailgating scene to the deafening noise inside the Fargodome, everything about the experience reflected a program that had already developed the infrastructure and passion of a major college football power. Now, with a new level of competition and a host of challenges ahead, the Bison program feels reborn. The fanbase has a renewed energy, and the Fargodome remains one of the most intimidating home environments in college football. North Dakota State’s FBS era has begun. And if its debut is any indication, the Bison are ready for what comes next.
