Game #383: Western Illinois @ Wisconsin

Since Luke Fickell’s arrival in Madison in 2023, the Badgers have been on a steady decline. Last November, some glimmers of hope emerged as Wisconsin knocked off two Top 25 teams. An offseason filled with roster changes and renewed messaging left Badger faithful cautiously optimistic.

A strong opening half against Notre Dame last week did little to raise expectations, however, as Wisconsin ultimately fell 41-13.

With Western Illinois coming to town, the Badgers were expected to find their footing and correct some of the flaws exposed the previous week. The opening play seemed to set the tone for a return to better days, as Abu Sama III burst 72 yards for a touchdown, briefly bringing a sense of nostalgia to Camp Randall.

But the game never developed into the dominant performance many expected. Wisconsin escaped with a 36-9 victory, yet the final score did little to quiet the questions surrounding this team.

Rebuilding is difficult—especially after the first attempt falls short. Patience in Madison is wearing thin, but a favorable schedule provides Wisconsin with opportunities to show tangible progress. Fickell is feeling the heat, and with expectations rising and patience dwindling, this could be his final season to put out the fire.
