A beautiful autumn afternoon in Pullman elevated an already fantastic gameday atmosphere. Fans gathered in sizable numbers for tailgating and the pregame team walk known as the Cougar Prowl. Martin Stadium filled with crimson as fans geared up to take on a familiar foe.
Former Pac-12 conference opponent Arizona strolled into town looking for more than a moment to reminisce. The Cougs had a four-game home winning streak to defend, and a victory over the Wildcats would make a fifth straight win that much more meaningful.
It seemed as though Wazzu had all the momentum early. Blasting out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter had the crowd roaring with excitement. But Arizona slowly chipped away at the deficit. As the game wore on, four touchdown passes from Wildcats quarterback Noah Fifita gradually silenced Martin Stadium.
Arizona ultimately walked out of Pullman with a 34-24 victory.
Despite the loss and a frustrating 1-3 start, Washington State has plenty to look forward to with Fresno State coming to town next week. The matchup will mark the beginning of conference play in the new-look Pac-12.
The Cougars have been punched in the mouth early this season, but a fresh conference slate brings with it a renewed sense of optimism. With conference play finally here, Wazzu has a chance to turn the page and start building momentum toward the rest of the season.
