The Fighting Irish and Cardinal battle annually for The Legends Trophy, one that Stanford acquired last year with a stunning upset over Notre Dame in South Bend. This year’s Irish, led by transfer quarterback Sam Hartman, have been a formidable force. Stanford has struggled this season under their new coaching regime. However, notable wins over Colorado and Washington State keep the possibility of an upset in play.
Three turnovers by Notre Dame kept the game close into the second quarter. A 56-yard field goal lifted Stanford to a 16-14 lead nearing halftime. But, runningback Audric Estimé powered the ground game. His four rushing touchdowns vaporized the Cardinal and Notre Dame went onto a 56-23 victory, thus reclaiming The Legends Trophy.
A sun splashed afternoon on “The Farm” served as a redeemable aspect of the day for Cardinal fans. Mostly friendly interactions took place between the large contingent of Notre Dame fans and the Stanford faithful. But, Senior Day was a bust. It ended without a win for Stanford, an achievement they never experienced at home all season. The likelihood of that trend perpetuating in future seasons is slim. Notre Dame ends the regular season on a high as they await their bowl game future.
