In the postgame press conference, Coach Lane Kiffin remarked that he would refrain from commenting on what he perceived as poor officiating in the game. You could tell he really wanted to. He did speak hyperbolically in mentioning that it took the refs ‘5 hours’ to discuss calls. He said he didn’t think he could get fined for that. In the end, his frustration with the loss robbed the best of him, and he tweeted a photo the next day of referees with blind canes and guide dogs. He was fined $5000.

A wild fourth quarter kept the homecoming crowd wearing down the edges of their seats. With Marshall leading by 5 at the onset of the final stanza, both teams traded blows that rocked the lead back and forth. The Owls looked to have secured momentum when taking a 31-30 lead near the game’s end. But, Marshall mounted a winning drive of their own, and FAU followed it up with a back-breaking interception that locked in a 36-31 victory for the Herd.
Despite a pregame saturated with parking lot pageantry and Owlsley antics, the enthusiasm didn’t translate to a victory on the field. But, Lane Kiffin has built a culture of expectation in Boca Raton, one that is only enhanced by an improving team and his “freedom of tweet.”
