Game #341: Iowa @ Wisconsin

Iowa’s beggarly offense has been the laughingstock of the college football world. Their 5-1 record stems from a stingy defense that enjoys taking turns scoring, as well. Wins are wins. But, when would it catch up with the Hawkeyes? Wisconsin’s new coaching regime has installed a more pass friendly offense that has experienced some growing pains. Iowa would be the best defense it has faced yet.

A gray and cool October afternoon welcomed a packed crowd to Camp Randall. With hate for Iowa on display, the Badgers seemed set to take on their toughest test in the Big Ten West. One lightning strike by the Hawkeyes set the tone. An 82-yard dash to the endzone by Leshon Williams was the only touchdown of the game and all Iowa would need to take home the the 72 pound Heartland Trophy that goes to the victor of this border war. Wisconsin’s QB Tanner Mordecai would suffer a broken hand that kept him from second half play adding injury to insult. An unsurprising safety and two field goals would help Iowa secure a 15-6 triumph.

So, what now for Iowa? How many times can they combine with an opponent for less than 30 points and still win? And what about Wisconsin? How will they recover from this stifling loss that took their quarterback? As it stands, the Hawkeyes are in the driver’s seat now as they eye Indianapolis and the Big Ten title game.
