Akron limped into its combat with Buffalo mustering a meager 2-6 record and looking to avoid post season elimination. Buffalo entered undefeated in league play, but struggling to take command over any of its contests. Today, would be an ugly battle with neither team coming away feeling dominant.
A slow start featured a safety and field goal only to be interrupted by a late first half Buffalo touchdown that gave the Bulls a 10-3 lead at the break. The student section got forcefully vocal towards Zips players as their team took the lead. However, Akron found enough offense in the second half and plenty of defense to recover and keep the lead for a 24-16 victory.
Turnovers took the headlines – eight in total and five committed by the home team. To celebrate defensive ball recoveries, Akron uses a tire placed over the head of the player that forced a turnover. That circular chunk of rubber got lifted up for four Buffalo interceptions that caused Akron players to respond to the Buffalo students with some sharp words of their own. The Bulls simply looked inept, and Akron had just enough fire power to secure the win.
