COASTAL CAROLINA – BROOKS STADIUM

Coastal Carolina University was established in 1954, and broke from the University of South Carolina system in 1993. As an independent public university, Coastal ascended to the FBS in 2017 becoming a formidable force on the gridiron. Situated near Myrtle Beach, CCU calls Conway home with a charming college campus saturated in spirit.

Being so close to the beach, Coastal’s colors are teal and bronze to represent the sea and the sand. The coastline inspires the motto, “Ball At The Beach.” Teal is the emphatic hue, which paints the entire gridiron at Brooks Stadium. This unique color fervently showcases Coastal’s identity.

Coastal Carolina’s mascot is Chauncey the Chanticleer. Early in the school’s history, CCU was a branch of the University of South Carolina system. Therefore, when choosing a mascot, they wanted something related to USC’s Gamecock. They settled on the Chanticleer, one of the most distinctive mascots in college athletics. This fierce rooster resembles the Gamecock, but establishes Coastal’s own brand. In the world of mascots, the Chanticleer stands out as he embodies the moxie of teal nation.

Sharing the sidelines with Chauncey is Maddox, the live rooster that has been crowing at Coastal games since 2011. The name comes from Cal F. Maddox, the former basketball coach and English professor who helped come up with the Chanticleer nickname. Maddox is a fan favorite at Coastal as he adds even more pomp to the teal turf.

Football victories in Conway are celebrated with the sounding of the Beaty Memorial Victory Bell. Displayed just outside the stadium, fans line up to punctuate the celebration with a clang. The joyous sound can last long after a Chanticleer win.

Conway, South Carolina is a fresher face on the FBS college football landscape. But, Coastal Carolina has forged their own distinguishing brand through zany mascots and unique school colors. As the Teal Nation continues to grow, college football fans are taking notice of the boys who ball at the beach.
