LOUISIANA TECH – JOE AILLET STADIUM

Joe Aillet Stadium

Louisiana Tech University contributes an energetic gameday spirit to the ecosystem of northeast Louisiana’s bayou country. Located in Ruston, about an hour east of Shreveport, Joe Aillet Stadium has been home to the Bulldogs since 1968. Named after the coach and administrator who proudly led Louisiana Tech over the span of three decades, this venue has undergone numerous renovations. A new press box and luxury seats along with a state of the art athletic complex and champions plaza have brought this venue to the next level. A short distance from the charming collegiate downtown, Joe Aillet Stadium is the epicenter of excitement on a football Saturday in Ruston.

Tailgating swells around the stadium’s perimeter leans most heavily on the west side where a fan zone fills with a community of tents. Framed by towering trees, this cozy nook becomes a wide corridor of red and blue fanatics awaiting the arrival of their beloved Bulldogs. A few hours prior to kickoff, buses drop off the team to be led through the tailgates by spirit squads, Champ the Bulldog, and the Louisiana Tech Band of Pride. The marching band sticks around to entertain with a pep rally featuring both the fight song and alma mater.

Shortly before kickoff, a gameday treasure on wheels is rolled out to center field. A giant silver bell gleaming against the stadium lights delivers a crisp sound to summon the players onto the field. A special guest is chosen for each game to ring the bell and signal the start of game time. While many schools use a bell to celebrate a touchdown, Louisiana Tech’s bell only tolls at the onset of the game making it a resoundingly anticipated part of the festivities. Known as the Fire Bell for its history of alerting Ruston residents of foreboding flames, it holds a deep connection to the bulldog nickname. In 1899, a campus dwelling bulldog alerted sleeping Tech students of a fire in their building during the night. While the students survived, the bulldog sadly perished in the blaze. But the Lousiana Tech nickname was born from his display of bravery, and the Fire Bell rings in his memory.

Two mascots represent the Bulldogs of Ruston. Champ the Bulldog costumes up and struts to the beat of gameday. From tailgating to tail wagging, Champ delivers delight as he interacts with the Louisiana Tech faithful. Second of the two mascots is showcased on the sidelines. Coming from a long line of English bulldogs, Tech is the darling of athletics teams. Squat to the ground and boxy in his walk, Tech entertains without much effort. He has proudly represented the loyalty and love for this university since the 1950s.

Ruston offers much to bark about on game days. Rich in history, but always modernizing, Louisiana Tech provides a powerful setting for football Saturdays. Continued investment in to this program demonstrates the determined spirit of this university and fan base. It resonates in the stands as pride pulsates throughout Joe Aillet Stadium. College football is better with places like this in the spotlight.
